The Birth of Dayspaces

As told by Sydney Berry Ling, Founder of Dayspaces

In the fall of 2018, I leisurely wandered into a commercial space for sale in downtown Knoxville. The listing price was well beyond what I could afford, but I had a vision for coworking and the space would be absolutely perfect. So, I figured, “Why not have a look?” After unexpectedly meeting the owner during my pop-in, I knew there was more happening. That serendipitous moment led me to open Red Chair Workspaces, a coworking space hosted by Red Chair Architects.

To make a long story short, the owner of Red Chair Architects found a buyer soon after we launched and sold the space in April 2019. Though the concept didn’t survive in that particular space, it sparked something bigger. Several months later, the following question entered my mind:

I wonder if there are other underused commercial spaces around that would be interested in opening their doors for coworking?

So, I started asking around. The answer I got was a resounding ‘heck, yes’ – and Dayspaces was born.
